Heads up! If you would like to split your donation between multiple charities or funds, please email our team after you submit your donation, or learn more in our blog post.

Get ready: Your 2021 donation deadlines

Holy heck, did the end of the year sneak up on you like it did us?! We’ve got a lot on our plate right now and we’re sure you do too, so we’ll cut right to the chase.

Two important notes

  1. Please be patient, it takes us a few days to issue your tax receipt. Normally it takes us up to two business days to send your tax receipt, but we receive a very high volume of donations in late December (very exciting!), so sometimes it takes us an extra day or two.
  2. If you’re still deciding where to give, we highly recommend our RC Forward Funds, available for five cause areas: Global Health, Human Empowerment, Animal Welfare, Long-Term Future, and Climate Change. Your donations to these funds support the latest high-impact giving opportunities, based on the advice of the cause-area experts that we partner with. Read more on our FAQ page.

Here are your deadlines by payment method if you’d like a tax receipt dated for this calendar year:

Online donations by credit card (preferred for smaller donations): Dec 31

The most forgiving of methods for last-second donations: If you complete your credit card donation by the end of the day on December 31, you will receive a tax receipt dated for 2021. Your credit card donation must be made online through our website. After selecting a charity or fund you’d like to donate to, on the first page of our donation form, be sure to select “Credit Card” under the Payment Type field. Pro tip: Remember that you can split a single donation between up to 6 different charities on the second page of our donation form!

Online donations by bank account (preferred for larger donations): Dec 30

These take an extra day to process, so you’ll need to make sure you complete your bank account donation by the end of the day on December 30 to receive a tax receipt dated for 2021. Your bank account donation must be made online through our website. After selecting a charity or fund you’d like to donate to, on the first page of our donation form, be sure to select “Bank Account” under the Payment Type field. Pro tip: Remember that you can split a single donation between up to 6 different charities on the second page of our donation form!

Donations by e-transfer (only donations over $200, please): Dec 28

If you’re looking to avoid credit card fees on larger donations, we’d prefer that you donate online by bank account (see instructions above) to ensure that we can process your donation on time without hitting our bank’s daily e-transfer limit. Because of these bank limits, you must make your e-transfer donation by December 28 in order to be assured a 2021 tax receipt. We may still be able to process e-transfers after that, but we can’t guarantee the date on your tax receipt. Also please note, most people have a $3,000 daily limit on outgoing e-transfers, so plan accordingly.

Please send e-transfers to [email protected] Additionally, please send a separate email to the same address containing the preferred allocation (e.g., RC Forward Climate Change Fund) as well as the security password for your e-transfer.

Donations by cheque (only donations over $200, please): Dec 28

We get it. You prefer the classic cheque donation, and we respect that. By law, envelopes containing cheques must be postmarked by December 31 to receive a tax receipt for that year. The cheque can arrive in the new year and still be eligible for a 2021 tax receipt. However, please be aware of common complications:

  • Oftentimes, donors will put their cheques in the mail on December 30 or 31 and assume that the envelope will get postmarked before the new year. However, due to the volume of mail received by Canada Post and adjusted mail pick-up times, sometimes to postmark date is in January. There’s nothing we can do about this.
  • For the same reasons, it’s often well into January before we receive these cheques, so it might be mid-January before you receive your tax receipt at all.

So play it safe. If you’re going to give by cheque, please have it in the mail by December 28 at the latest.

Cheques made out to Rethink Charity Foundation can be sent to Rethink Charity, 308-303 E. Pender St., Vancouver, BC, V6A 0J3. (For complete instructions on how to donate by cheque, please see our FAQ page.)
